Selected Experience/Case Studies
Administrative and Management Support
AMEX successfully provides overall support services to USAID’s Food for Peace Program. This support includes assisting in developing program guidelines, maintaining the Food for Peace Information System and providing operational, commodity procurement and transportation support. For eight years AMEX managed all activities associated with USAID Africa Bureau’s Office of Sustainable Development. The firm’s responsibilities included clerical tasks, publications, information dissemination, technical assistance, development and management of local and regional networks, and coordinating with other organizations.
Economic Growth
AMEX assistance in Ghana as part of the Trade and Investment Reform Program resulted in 2,122 business linkages and 1,525 instances in which managerial and technical constraints were reduced through AMEX support. A total of 1,818 Ghanaian firm operators were trained, contributing to increased export earnings of $63.31 million in the Agriculture/Agribusiness sector, $14.74 million in the value-added wood sector, and $13.56 million in the garment/handicraft sector. Overall project-staff technical assistance resulted in increases in management capacity, production and marketing and in the use of improved technologies.
Democracy and Governance
AMEX implemented a USAID-funded Strengthening the Rule of Law program in both Armenia and the Republic of Georgia, which achieved significant successes, particularly in drafting and enacting several new fundamental laws and codes. AMEX also assisted these countries to develop the government and civil society institutions necessary to implement this legislation and to develop the rule of law. As the principal lawmaker responsible for drafting the new three-part Civil Code said in the press, “this could not have been achieved without the technical and material assistance provided by USAID [via AMEX].
Worldwide Shipping & Procurement
AMEX has procured and shipped a wide variety of agricultural commodities, office equipment and supplies to over 40 countries worldwide. Our shipment of food aid to the Republic of Georgia resulted in a public commendation from the prime minister, who lauded the $4 million savings resulting from AMEX’s efficient and cost-effective services.

AMEX also helps build local shipping and procurement capacity. For example, in Ghana AMEX linked Ghanaians with the major suppliers—local and international—of goods and services. AMEX technical experts also conducted seminars and workshops to train farmers and small business entrepreneurs in marketing, procurement standards and procedures, proper handling and packaging of products and methods of transportation.
